Washington (Manand News Desk) Thousands of US military ships have left for the Indian Ocean to patrol the Strait of Hormuz after several countries rejected requests for assistance. The military will gain complete control over Iran after opening the Strait of Hormuz.
The narrow waterway, which is the source of about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), has been closed to shipping since the start of the Iran war about three weeks ago.
Critical energy infrastructure in Iran and neighboring Gulf states has also been targeted, while oil prices have risen by about 50 percent since the war began on February 28, threatening a global economic crisis.
In an effort to increase supply and reduce prices, the Trump administration has said it will ease sanctions on Iran to allow the sale of 140 million barrels of oil that have been stuck on tankers since the war began.
The administration has previously eased sanctions on a similar amount of Russian oil.
More than 2,000 people have been killed so far, mostly in Iran and Lebanon, and concerns are growing among the American public that the war could spread further.
Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe Trump will order troops to launch a large-scale ground war, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, while only 7 percent support such a move.
The Israeli military said on Friday it had carried out two major air strikes in Tehran and central Iran, targeting weapons facilities and storage sites for ballistic missile launchers and their components. Israel was hit by multiple missile attacks from Iran, the Israeli military said, setting off sirens in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and the sounds of missiles being destroyed in mid-air.
Fragments of an Iranian missile fell in Jerusalem on Friday, landing just outside the Old City, a holy site for Christians, Jews and Muslims, police said. Police released a photo of the debris, but there were no reports of injuries or deaths.
Kuwait’s state-run oil company said its Mina al-Ahmadi refinery was hit by multiple drone strikes, setting some units on fire. It is the latest in a series of attacks by Iran on energy facilities in recent days.
