Islamabad (Manand News Desk) Arshad Sharif, the famous anchor of ARY News, was shot dead by the Kenian police. According to details, a Pakistani journalist was killed by a police bullet at a road block in Kajiado. The police said that it was a case of “mistaken identity”.
Police headquarters said the Independent Policing Oversight Authority would handle the case.
The news of this incident spread rapidly in Pakistan where the journalist was prominent.
A senior Pakistani journalist was shot dead on Sunday night along the Nairobi-Magadi highway in what police said was a mistaken identity.
Arshad Sharif was shot dead in the head by police when he and his driver allegedly violated a road block set up to check motor vehicles using the route.
Police said they were traveling from Magadi town to Nairobi when they were flagged down at a roadblock manned by a group of police officers.
Police headquarters said the Independent Policing Oversight Authority will handle the case.
A senior police officer confirmed the shooting, adding that a comprehensive statement would be issued later.
“We have an incident of firing which turns out to be a case of mistaken identity by a journalist. We will release more information later,” the officer said.
According to the police, after a carjacking incident in Pangani, Nairobi, where a child was taken hostage, the police were called to stop a business they were operating at a road block.
A few minutes later, Sharif’s car came to a road block and he was stopped and asked to show his identity.
They allegedly failed to stop and drove through the road block.
A brief chase ensued, killing Sharif. His car overturned and his driver was injured and taken to hospital.
He later told the police that he and his deceased co-developer were on their way to a site in Magadi.
The news of this incident spread rapidly in Pakistan where this journalist was prominent.
Sharif’s wife Jawaria Siddiqui confirmed the sad news on Twitter and admitted that her husband was killed in Kenya.
“I lost my friend, husband and my favorite journalist [Arshad Sharif] today, police say he was shot in Kenya,” she tweeted.
He also appealed to the media and the public not to share their family photos, personal details and Sharif’s last photos from the hospital on social media.
